Music Magazine analysis, Pop magazine contents page

POP! Magazine contents

The language used is more on the childish side it includes words such as ‘cool’, ‘champ’ and ‘cringe quizz’ which would attract the younger audience as it would relate to how they speak. Most of the same colours for the front cover are used for the contents pages which are white, blue and yellow, these colours contrast each other making them stand out against each other.
The contents page is basically like the front cover, Justin Beiber being the main focus again and JLS in the middle but a different picture this time, Lady GaGa replacing cheryl cole and liked with each picture there is a page number to show the article to go to. The contents page has a lotof pictures of major artists/Bands that are popular at the time having the page numbers help the reader go to what they bought the magazine for by what they saw on the front cover.

The masthead is the same as the front cover which makes it clear of the name and more recognisable for next time. In the middle of this contents page directly under the masthead is a brief description of what’s in this week’s issue.

Analysis of music of a music magazine- Pop magazine

POP! magazine front cover
Fonts and colours
The mast head is big so it stands out, it’s written in a ‘Barbie’ pink and then it’s got a  white outline on a blue background having the outline around the heading makes it stand out a little more. The masthead is in the centre which is usually at the top. Its got a camera flash type of light in between the O and the last P. It also has a explanation mark with a heart at the bottom which suggests its for young girls. This magazine uses a variety of different fonts and the whole magazine appears to be for a younger age with ‘fun’ type writing and  seems to be more on the feminine side, but is still clear to read. The main colour scheme is blue; pink and yellow.
Target audience
Pop’s target audience is mainly aimed young girls , the genre is more with pop music featuring ‘hottie’  boy bands.

Pictures

There are three main pictures on the front of the magazine he biggest, Justin Bieber is the main picture even though he is on the right, the picture is a mid-shot. The second picture more inward the background is of popular boy band JLS, having boy bands on the front cover suggest the magazine is for girls as their both ‘hotties’ the third picture is of Cheryl Cole which is on the lower left.   Pop’s magazine front cover is divided into 3 main sections vertically and horizontally using the principle of thirds. The top half focuses on the title and the main picture of Justin Bieber. The second section the middle half is of the picture JLS, the third section the bottom half focuses on the third picture Cheryl Cole and the smaller cover lines.

Evaluation of Preliminary task

How have you used media conventions?
  • I have used many different media convention on my school magazine front cover. I have thought about the principal of thirds, with the masthead in the first third, the coverlines in the second third and the main larger coverline in the final third. I have also thought about colour schemes, by having the background image and the coverlines matching. I have used a picture that doesnt necessarily limit the target audience and that will appeal to people of the school. I have used the ‘route of the eye’ technique as well as the ‘primary optical area’ and the ‘terminal area’ by putting important information in these areas. The school website is in terminal area because it is the last thing people will see so they should remember it. The issue number and date are in the primary optical area so it is the first thing people notice and they can tell which issue from which month it is.
What technologies have you used?
For the main cover of my preliminary task i used fireworks to remove the background from the picture i took, so i could place the picture on the background without the background overcrowding the magazine cover
To take the picture I used a digital camera and then uploaded the photo. I also used fireworks to edit the photo slightly to remove the background and brighten the photo.
What skills have you developed that will help you produce your main task?
  • I have developed my skills in how to place the heading, pictures and cover lines in the correct place for them to be noticed.
  • I have also developed my skills in what different shots there are as i didn’t really know there was such a variety before.
  • I have used my skills to find the right type of fonts that will suit a certain magazine and which one’s stand out.
Are there any skills you think you will need to develop?
  • I will need to improve on the layout of a magazine and where to place fonts and i can place them over a picture in the wrong place.
  • I will need to develop my research skills better as i can get impatient if I can’t find the font, picture, information etc. So i will need to be more specific in what i’m looking for and wait as it won’t come to me strait away.

School Magazine Contents page.

School magazine FINAL draft.

Second Draft of school magazine

For my second school magazine draft i have placed the school name as the Masthead at the top of the magazine sticking to the conventions. I chose this font as it stood out and was called ‘Varsity’ so it matched the school/college theme. I have placed a red strip down the side behind the cover lines as i felt it added a little bit more of a contrast in colours and red black and white is the school colours so it will stand out. The extra information in the bottom left hand corner as this is the last place you look according to the eye line match and i felt this corner is a good place to put the last info.

Basic Draft of School Magazine

For my Basic Draft version of my school magazine i have placed the headlines down one side and placed my masthead and Name of the school at the top of the front cover to stick to the basic convention. The issue number and year in the bottom right corner to follow the route of the eye as that’ll be the last thing you see. I have placed the picture to the right of the page as it is still in the hot spot area but moved it to the right as it gave ore space for the headlines.

Conventions of a school/ College magazine cover

  • Bright images that stand out and that appeal to a wide audience, the majority of school/ college magazines have a picture of a group of people that could appeal to everyone. E.g. if the cover had a picture of a ballet dancer on the cover it would not appeal to males as much as females. Therefore placing a picture with a group/ wide range of people in the cover it can appeal to all audiences.
  • There is usually one main cover line followed by a list of other features and interests.
  • Usually there is a simple masthead with the name of the school either above or underneath the masthead.
  • The magazines most of the time have a issue number and year to clearly show when it’s from.
  • There is usually a set colour scheme on school/ college magazines as they tend to use the school colours. And the masthead usually matches the colour scheme and the school’s font.

school magazine analysis 2.

The masthead follows the route of the eye even though it is on a tilt. The masthead font is simple and easy to read.

There is a basic colour scheme of red, yellow and blue. By sticking to the primary colours it shows a simplistic effect.

There is a few basic pictures, the boy in the centre of the hot spot in the rule of thirds. Followed by two other pictures following the route of eye, a football shoe and a car.

The pictures show a “kid” type effect along with the colour scheme and simple fonts.

School Magazine Analysis 1.

The school magazine Evolve follows the route of the eye, with the Masthead  at the top, then going through the picture as the focus, and then through to the catch line.

The magazine also follows the rule of thirds. With the main collage of pictures in the centre inside the hotspot square.

The masthead is a simple font but also stands out and is easy to read. The light yellow background allows the masthead and other fonts to stand out and contrast with the picture.

The collage of pictures makes the centre of the magazine quite crowded, but involves a lot of “the college life”.

The cover has a simple layout with a basic feel to it.
There isn’t really a set colour scheme as the collaged picture has alot of different colours, but the background is a faded yellow going from bright yellow at the top until its white at the bottom.
